We are in love with Aubrac.
This vast plateau on the borders of the departments of Lozère, Cantal and Aveyron, is in itself a country.
At an altitude of 1400 meters, the air is purer, the light more beautiful, the horizons wider.
The history of Aubrac was written throughout the drailles.
Flora, Aubrac cows, streams, small lakes, peat bogs, and of course women and men, have shaped this space ...
Because we love Aubrac, we have decided to allow you to discover it and get to know it through unusual accommodation, in the buron d'Alteteste.
Alteteste is a “mountain”, a 130 hectare summer pasture, in our family for several generations.
Every year, at Saint-Urbain, on May 25, the transhumance of Aubrac cows takes place from the Causse, near Cruéjouls, to the mountain. They will spend all summer there until Saint-Géraud, October 13, date of Davalada (the descent to the Causse).
The buron d'Alteteste (perched at 1337 meters above sea level) was intended, like all burons, for the accommodation of the staff who took care of the cow farm, milking and the manufacture of the "fourme" d '. Aubrac.
Behind the thick basalt walls, well sheltered from the burle and the winds, you will appreciate the soft and relaxing atmosphere of the buron. You will dive into the history of this heritage, you will imagine the life of the buronniers, who spent 5 months of the year there.
Far from consumer society, noise, in an authentic setting, with respect for the environment, you will appreciate this break with life which is sometimes too hectic.
Whether with family or friends, we have done everything to make your stay unforgettable.
The main room, equipped with a fireplace, can take meals for up to 25/30 people. A kitchen will allow you to prepare meals. You can cook, on the fireplace, or on the barbecue.
A sanitary, shower and WC provide essential comfort.
The first floor has a partitioned bedroom equipped with a 1.40 m bed, while an open dormitory allows group accommodation.
Around the buron, a secure space, equipped with barnums, tables and benches, will allow you to take your meals outside without limitation of number.
Les Burons or Mazucs
From the middle of the 19th century, burons (mazucs in Occitan) were built on Aubrac. There were 300 at the beginning of the 20th century.
Each "mountain", each summer had its buron.
The buron consisted of 3 rooms: on the ground floor the main room where we found the tools for making cheese, a basic kitchen and a dining area. Upstairs, the attic, where the men slept and stored hay reserves for the calves, and finally the cellar, located partly underground where the cheeses were stored and matured.
Near the buron, was often built a pigsty. The "whey" from the production of cheese was fed to pigs.
