The Lac du Der-Chantecoq is located not far from Saint-Dizier, the departments of the Marne and Haute-Marne.
With an area of 48 km ², is the largest artificial lake in Europe. Rated capacity is 350 Mm ³.
Built on the site of the lake-reservoir Champaubert-aux-Bois, it was inaugurated in 1974 by Robert Galley (Minister of Public Works). It is used today to relieve the Marne to prevent flooding of the Seine in Paris, as the floods of 1910 and 1924, which flooded much of the French capital. It is managed by the Interdepartmental Institution of dams and reservoirs of the Seine Basin.
