Lake of the forest of the East is an artificial lake located in the upper basin of the Seine in the Aube and the Regional Natural Park of the Orient forest. Commissioned in 1966, this lake-reservoir, diversion from the course of the Seine, is part of a set of four books designed to control the river flow by reducing flooding and providing a minimum low flow. The other three are the Lac du Der-Chantecoq in derivation of the Marne, lakes Amance and the Temple of Dawn in parallel, Lake Pannecière on the Yonne, is managed by a public administrative institution, the "Institution of inter-basin dams and reservoirs of the Seine" (IIBRBS)
Its name comes from the fact that the place where he belonged to the Templars.
Providing a body of water of 2300 hectares, this lake has a storage capacity of 205 million cubic meters. It is closed by several compacted earth dams, including the highest, the dam of the Morge, reaching 25 meters high. It is fed by a canal taking water from the Seine upstream of Troyes. The management of the lake is done according to a regulation of water defined by the prefecture.
The creation of the lake led to the development of tourism and recreation, swimming, sailing and fishing in particular. It also houses a bird sanctuary.
