History of the castle of Maintenon since the Middle Ages, as evidenced by its square tower of the twelfth century. Among its owners, is Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon future, who bought the estate in 1674.
It was enlarged and embellished the castle, before becoming in 1684 the secret wife of Louis XIV. Le Notre designed the park and dug the great canal which passes under the aqueduct built by Vauban and La Hire.
The unfinished building was to bring the waters of the Eure to Versailles.
It is subject to a classification as historical monuments since July 1944.
