Le Chapeau Rouge in Lusignan is a former post-house built in 1643, in a small town which was rebuilt after the destruction of its prestigious château during the religious wars. A testament to this period is the wonderful fireplace which, with its counterweight spit, stands out in the main hall with whitened beams and warms it up again when winter arrives. Therefore, for years, Le Chapeau Rouge has been an essential living space in Lusignan, the peasants no longer bring their beasts there to sell them like they did at the start of the last century, but the people from the neighbourhood happily meet there for a drink at the bar or on the terrace. They come across the tourists who are staying in the hotel to treat themselves to a gourmet break while they are visiting the region or on the road in the direction of the coast, Spain or Portugal. Perhaps during this break, they will remember the captivating Melusine, mother of the line of the Lusignans (great medieval lords), the one of whom it is said built the city in a single night.
Tourists will be able to visit the historic centre of Lusignan and to discover there, among other things, its wonderful 12th century church, its covered markets from the 19th century, as well as the promenade of Blossac, a garden landscaped in the 18th century on the site of the former château. For nature fans, 85km of hiking trails have been developed and on the banks of the Vonne and the Vauchiron water sports centre offers numerous water and sporting activities. All the rest of the region is made up of historic sites and the delights offered by nature. You can therefore stroll in the state forest of Saint-Sauvant, a vast 800 hectare oak grove located 7km from Le Chapeau Rouge, or visit the Gallo Roman site of Sanxay, 18km away. This major archaeological site of the ancient province of Aquitaine is also known for its theatre where, every year, in August, unforgettable lyrical evenings take place. Obviously, the major theme park of the region happens to be Futuroscope, which attracts many Europeans. Some prefer to sleep in the more typical places of Vienna than in the hotels which were built around it and come to visit us as we are just 35km from the park.
