Built on the ruins of a fort built by Vauban, the Dunkirk Lighthouse was commissioned in 1843. It is the only lighthouse of the Northern Department.
It is shaped like a cylindrical tower 63 feet high, resting on a rectangular building containing two dwelling units and rooms.
A staircase of 276 steps leads to the lantern. Its light flashing at two white flashes 10 s, is illuminated by a lamp of 1000 W. It has a range of 26 miles (approximately 48 km). It is automated since 1985.
It is not kept but you can visit by contacting the museum port of Dunkirk.
