Founded in 1876, the Museum of Fine Arts Agen, located in the historic heart of the city, is housed in four great mansions of the Renaissance, on beautiful open courtyards. It is one of the richest museums in the Southwest and this, in a pleasant journey evoking the inside of a rich collector, a collection of paintings and sculptures, furniture and European ceramics from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
The museum is particularly known for its rich collection of Spanish works of eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including five exceptional paintings by Goya. Among the most remarkable collections, we also include still lifes, Flemish and Dutch paintings from the seventeenth century French (Champaigne) and Italy (Tintoretto), the collection of portraits of the Dukes of Aiguillon (Greuze, Oudry, Drouais Troy, Van Loo, Nattier ...). The nineteenth century French is represented by the great masters of painting (Courbet, Millet), the landscapes of the Barbizon school (Corot) and the Impressionists (Boudin, Sisley, Caillebotte, A. Lebourg).
Finally works of the twentieth century are presented with two remarkable collections of the French painter Roger Bissière one hand, and Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne, on the other.
The archaeological section of the Museum consists of artifacts from sites Lot et Garonne: a collection of Celtic times and Gallo-Roman is a major aspect. Finally, a very nice donation of Oriental Archaeology (objects from the Bronze Age until the Crusader period, from Lebanon and Syria) has enriched the museum.
