Founded in 1856, housed in the former mansion of Antoine Lécuyer, the Museum became a place of reference to know the work of Maurice Quentin Delatour. Exclusively a portrait painter, the artist was famous for his ability to capture not only the features but also the psychology of his models. His work reflects the brilliant society of the century of Louis XV: philosophers and writers (Voltaire, Rousseau, d'Alembert), painters, singers and musicians, aristocrats and wealthy bourgeois, until supreme consecration, the Marquise de Pompadour and the royal family .
