Classified site with an area of 340 ha, it stretches nearly 3.5 km and is part of the Great Lakes Landes.
Receiving waters of the mighty stream of Sainte-Eulalie, the pond is fed by several streams down from the plateau Landes, from Escource, Pontenx-les-Forges (CRASTE of Mouliot), Saint-Paul-en-Born, or the confines Mimizan (stream Capit).
Its outlet is the current Mimizan Woolsack and the castle stands on its banks.
In 1801, the municipality of Mimizan requests the Government to fix the dunes rushing in a frightful manner into the lake of Mimizan and make the waters recede in the lands of the interior and in the course.
As part of the implementation of the Act of June 19, 1857, was considered a time to drain the pond, the town being in favor of Aureilhan to recover and arable plots. The municipality of Mimizan eventually denied.
