Across from the ocean, the castle of Antoine d'Abbadie was built by Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc and Duthoit between 1860 and 1870. In Gothic architecture, and richly decorated, this building bears the mark of oriental passion of its owner as evidenced by all the furnishings. Antoine d'Abbadie (1810-1897), outstanding scientist, had set up an astronomical observatory in his castle, allowing teams of observers to construct catalogs of stars. Eclectic spirit and world traveler, he produced the first map of Ethiopia. Strongly attached to the Basque Country, it was one of the ardent defenders of their language and culture.
