The Abbey of Fontevraud Royal Abbey is not dependent on any order (but inspired Benedictine), founded in 1101 by Robert of Arbrissel and located near Saumur in Anjou (now Maine-et-Loire) near the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne. The outstanding feature of the abbey was to accommodate both men and women in separate convents, of course, and have been led since its foundation exclusively by abbesses, according to the rule laid down by its founder.
