Located near the Loire, in a green valley, near Nevers and La Charité sur Loire, about thirty miles from the famous vineyards of Pouilly sur Loire and Sancerre, the Cistercian abbey of Fontmorigny was founded in 1149 at the urging of St. Bernard. The monks were able to take advantage of the natural resources of their site and Fontmorigny, thanks to the steel industry experienced a major boom in the Middle Ages.
Can still be seen in this place of serenity, the abbey church, the ruins of the cloister, the refectory of the lay, the building entrance, the pool and the garden of the abbot.
Today the abbey hosts exhibitions and a music festival at Whitsun and August.
