This museum was inaugurated on July 3, 1887, following a donation made in 1883 by the abolitionist Victor Schoelcher in Guadeloupe. This building is the first open museum on the island. Today déparmental museum, it was renovated in 1998 for the events of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. It presents the life and works of Victor Schoelcher, ardent defender of free blacks and equality among all citizens.
