The Château de Joux is an ancient fort dating from the Middle Ages. It is located on a rocky outcrop to control the passage of the "gorge de Joux" natural axis crossing the Jura for over 2000 years.
The place was built and inhabited by the Lords of Joux since the 10th century, followed by Hochberg's house. Attachment to the Franche-Comte in the Kingdom of France, the place became a military fortress for monitoring the borders, was modified by Vauban in the time of Louis XIV, and was a state prison. The venue hosted the prisoners such as Mirabeau and Toussaint Louverture. The site will remain military until 1954, when he became a tourist site opened to the public.
The site has been beautifully restored and now hosts exhibitions and performances in the summer.
Its worth a visit in itself and can see two ancient sundials.
